Big Tech Executive Shares His Unexpected Journey to Success: A Tale of Stumbles and Progress

Wainwright Yu, a director at the prestigious Magnificent 7 company, reflects on his career journey, describing it as a series of "painful stumbles and detours" that ultimately led to his success. In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Lifestyle, Yu candidly discusses the challenges he faced and the lessons he learned along the way.

Upon receiving his promotion to director, Yu felt a sense of accomplishment. However, the following weeks brought a surprise when his manager left, and another director was hired to replace them. Despite his recent promotion, Yu was not given the opportunity to expand his role, leading to a moment of realization that the path to success at the company was not as straightforward as he had anticipated.

Yu's career at the Magnificent 7 began with a summer internship rejection, a disappointment that he initially attributed to a mistake. However, when he was later offered a full-time position, he accepted it with enthusiasm. His initial role was not what he had envisioned, but it eventually led to a promotion to principal product manager, a position he held for over three years.

His journey took another unexpected turn when he was assigned to a startup team within the company. As the third employee on a project that seemed promising but ultimately failed, Yu was transferred to a different team, working on a product he initially believed would not succeed. However, this team eventually expanded, and Yu's contributions played a significant role in its success.

Yu's experiences taught him valuable lessons about resilience and adaptability. He realized that the moments when everyone around him seemed to be leaving were often the ones worth staying for. "I've learned to run toward fear, shame, and disappointment rather than away from them," he said. "What I find is that the people who stay through the hard times earn the trust to do and be more."

Despite facing setbacks and being passed over for opportunities, Yu remained focused on his ultimate goal: to build things that mattered. "What I had to let go of was the path," he explained. "The door into the company via a summer internship closed, the door into a real product role through post-MBA placement closed, the door to scaled impact through a startup product closed, but the goal remained the same: build things that matter."

Today, Yu leads larger businesses with larger teams, making a significant impact on customer lives. His journey, marked by challenges and unexpected twists, serves as an inspiration to others pursuing their own paths to success. As he reflects on his career, Yu emphasizes the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of meaningful goals. "How did it feel getting here?" he asks. "About the same as always: like falling forward."
