A 13-year-old British schoolboy has officially stepped into the recording booth to become the newest voice behind one of the most famous figures in children's television, taking on the legendary lead role of Thomas the Tank Engine in an upcoming animated release.
Harry Sparkes, who hails from Harpenden in Hertfordshire, is making his professional voice-acting debut in *Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories*. The young newcomer will be performing alongside Hollywood star Henry Golding, best known for his leading performance in *Crazy Rich Asians*, who has joined the production as the show's official narrator.
For the young teenager, landing such a high-profile entertainment role came with the unique challenge of keeping the entire venture under wraps. For nine consecutive months, Sparkes routinely travelled to attend weekly studio recording sessions while keeping his involvement completely hidden from his fellow classmates and friends at school.
In order to explain his regular schedule and avoid raising any suspicion regarding his whereabouts, Sparkes devised an everyday cover story. He told his peers and teachers that he was absent from school to undergo routine physiotherapy sessions for a foot injury, successfully masking his secret career in the voice-acting industry.
Speaking about the extraordinary opportunity, Sparkes shared his personal excitement and disbelief regarding his transition from an audience member to the titular locomotive. He recalled how he spent his early childhood watching the animated programmes and playing with physical toy trains, making the reality of finally voicing Thomas feel completely surreal and amazing.
The young actor acknowledged that his friends at school will likely be completely stunned when they finally discover his high-profile voice work. Despite the secrecy, he expressed immense enthusiasm about contributing to a beloved entertainment universe that will be watched and enjoyed by a brand-new generation of young children as they grow up.
The upcoming production of *Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories* also represents an important visual evolution for the enduring brand. The brand-new series marks a distinct return to 3D computer animation, showcasing a bright and cheerful aesthetic that places Thomas and his fellow engines against sunny railway tracks and grand stone aqueducts.
Mattel, the global entertainment and toy company that owns the franchise, confirmed that the forthcoming series is designed to offer a contemporary feel while respecting the rich legacy of the classic brand. The company stated that the project will introduce audiences to a refreshed vision of the Island of Sodor, while continuing to celebrate the iconic railway adventures that fans have followed since the property's inception.
The long-running railway universe originally began nearly eight decades ago with the publication of *The Railway Series*, created by author the Reverend Wilbert Awdry in 1945. Over the ensuing generations, the stories have transitioned from classic storybooks into a globally recognized children's television and multimedia powerhouse.
Stepping into the narrator's booth alongside Sparkes, Henry Golding—whose notable feature film credits also include the 2019 releases *Last Christmas* and *The Gentlemen*—commented on the artistic significance of leading the storytelling for the revamped animated series.
Golding openly reflected on the storied lineage of the narrator position, noting that he felt he was working in the "shadow of giants." The role was famously established by Beatles legend Sir Ringo Starr in the early television adaptation, and was later performed by former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan, who narrated the 2008 feature special *Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery*.
In discussing the creative direction of the project, Golding noted that the new production aims to inject renewed vitality into the classic storytelling. He stated that the team hopes to bring a modern spin and fresh excitement to the beloved world of Thomas, effectively bringing the classic material up to date for contemporary viewers.
The rollout for *Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories* is scheduled across multiple digital platforms over the coming months. The production will first make its digital premiere on the official Thomas & Friends YouTube channel on 17 September.
Following its YouTube debut, the animated project will broaden its accessibility to global audiences when it arrives on the streaming platform Netflix on 30 September, allowing subscribers around the world to hear Sparkes' debut performance as the blue engine.
The multi-platform release plan is part of an expansive long-term roadmap for the franchise, with producers confirming that a full, comprehensive animated series will officially make its debut in early 2027.
