In Critical Wisconsin Battleground, Republican Derrick Van Orden Doubles Down on Trump Alliance

While a growing number of vulnerable House Republicans debate whether to separate themselves from Donald Trump ahead of the midterm elections, Wisconsin Congressman Derrick Van Orden is taking the opposite approach. The two-term incumbent representing the state’s 3rd Congressional District is leaning directly into his connection with the president, framing party fidelity as a fundamental obligation rather than a strategic liability.

Van Orden has openly criticized fellow Republican lawmakers who seek distance from the White House, arguing that such behavior is both shortsighted and disloyal. For the western Wisconsin representative, maintaining a tight alliance with Trump is central to his political identity as he prepares for a demanding reelection campaign in a district where previous contests have been decided by razor-thin margins.

His steadfast alignment comes amid significant political challenges for the ruling party. Republicans across the country are navigating a difficult midterm environment marked by sagging approval ratings for the president, widespread voter anxieties over the economy, and rising domestic opposition to the ongoing military conflict in Iran. These headwinds have fueled concern among party strategists that national issues could depress turnout or alienate moderate swing voters.

Despite these vulnerabilities, Van Orden is betting that his unapologetic, combative approach will energize the conservative grassroots. A former Navy SEAL whose political persona mirrors the president’s confrontational style, the incumbent operates on the belief that mobilizing the core base remains the most reliable path to victory so long as Trump maintains an undisputed hold on the Republican Party.

Before heading to Dallas to take part in the president’s midterm convention, Van Orden voiced strong frustration with what he sees as a lack of steadfastness in the nation's capital. He emphasized that genuine loyalty remains a missing ingredient in modern politics, maintaining that elected officials should demonstrate greater commitment to the party's leader and to their fellow citizens rather than retreating when circumstances become challenging.

Standing in his path is Democratic nominee Rebecca Cooke, a political activist who was raised on a family dairy farm and currently works part-time as a restaurant server. Cooke is pitching herself as a grounded, working-class alternative to the incumbent, aiming to capitalize on anti-establishment sentiment and general voter weariness with political conflict.

The contest represents a direct rematch between the two contenders. In their previous matchup two years earlier, Van Orden narrowly retained his seat by less than 3 percentage points, underscoring the district’s status as a premier battleground capable of swinging in either direction depending on turnout and voter sentiment.

With only a dwindling number of truly competitive congressional seats remaining nationwide, Wisconsin’s 3rd District has emerged as a cornerstone in the national fight for control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Both parties view the seat as essential, with Democrats regarding it as one of their prime opportunities to flip a district and reclaim the chamber's majority.

Geographically, the V-shaped district stretches across western Wisconsin, bordered on the west by Minnesota and the Mississippi River, and reaching down to the Illinois state line to the south. The region encompasses a mixture of rural agricultural communities, river towns, and suburban enclaves that together form a uniquely contested political ecosystem.

Historically, the area has demonstrated a marked preference for political moderation. Former Democratic Representative Ron Kind represented the district for 26 years before stepping down in 2022, maintaining support among independent voters throughout his long tenure. Prior to Kind’s extended service, the seat was held for 16 years by a moderate Republican.

The district's shifting presidential choices further illustrate its swing-seat status. Democrat Barack Obama carried the 3rd District in both of his presidential runs, demonstrating Democratic strength across western Wisconsin. However, Donald Trump went on to carry the district across three successive presidential campaigns, helping him narrowly win the state of Wisconsin in 2016 and 2024, despite losing the state in 2020.

Because of its persistent volatility and demographic makeup, prominent state leaders view the district as an accurate reflection of the wider electorate. U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican who has weathered several close races of his own, has pointedly described the area as a bellwether district located in an essential bellwether state.

The clash between the contrasting campaign approaches was on display during the Labor Day parade in Readstown, a community of fewer than 500 residents nestled in the scenic hills of the Driftless Area. Van Orden rode through the parade on a motorcycle with his grandsons, Teddy and Henry, while Cooke marched alongside an enthusiastic contingent of supporters, greeting local residents along the route.

Speaking prior to the parade, Cooke indicated that the mood on the ground suggests voters are exhausted by partisan rancor and eager for a clean break from conventional Washington leadership. She stated that constituents are actively seeking fresh representation, expressing confidence that everyday voters are ready to reject politics as usual in favor of new leadership.

That sentiment appears to resonate among a segment of the local electorate currently weighing their choices for November. Nancy Deckert, a 75-year-old retired postal employee living in Readstown, echoed Cooke’s message of renewal, stating that many area residents feel overwhelmed by the current political turmoil and are convinced that substantial change is needed at the ballot box.
