Michigan Senate Hopeful Abdul El-Sayed Faces Backlash Over 9/11 Post Amid Past Ties to Progressive Streamer

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate competing for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, has come under intense scrutiny from political opponents and conservative figures following the publication of an anniversary message commemorating the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In the statement shared across his social media presence, El-Sayed framed the historic tragedy as an assault on fundamental national values. He noted that the perpetrators struck not merely at the country's physical infrastructure, but at the foundational principles that define the American experience, describing the nation as one united by a collective commitment to freedom and justice even during times when those ideals prove difficult to fully attain. He concluded his reflection by honoring the thousands of innocent victims who perished during the catastrophic acts of terror.

Despite the conventional solemnity of the commemorative post, the message immediately triggered an aggressive backlash across digital platforms. Critics quickly seized upon El-Sayed’s established political relationship and personal friendship with Hasan Piker, a prominent left-wing Twitch streamer who has repeatedly drawn national ire for contentious rhetoric regarding American foreign policy.

Piker has previously faced widespread condemnation for controversial remarks in which he asserted that the United States "deserved 9/11," alongside other vulgar statements expressing disdain for the nation. Because Piker has actively participated in campaign events supporting El-Sayed's Senate bid—including an appearance alongside the candidate in a green room before an April 2026 rally at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor—critics argued that the candidate's solemn memorial stood in direct contradiction to his political alliances.

The response from conservative commentators and Republican strategists was swift and unsparing. The widely followed conservative account Libs of TikTok rebuked the Democratic hopeful directly, branding his public post as entirely disingenuous.

Steve Guest, a political commentator and former communications aide to Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, amplified the criticism by circulating a photograph of El-Sayed standing alongside Piker at the campaign event. Guest highlighted the juxtaposition by captioning the image with past inflammatory statements made by the streamer, directly questioning the candidate's alignment with such extreme rhetoric.

Republican strategist Ryan Girdusky also offered a scathing assessment of the Democratic nominee, asserting that actively campaigning with an individual who justified the September 11 attacks undermines the candidate's credibility. Girdusky characterized El-Sayed's willingness to associate with Piker while simultaneously posting solemn memorials as a display of brazen political dishonesty.

The controversy also drew formal condemnation from national party leadership. Joanna Rodriguez, the communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, sharply criticized El-Sayed for what she described as a persistent failure to formally repudiate Piker's remarks. Rodriguez accused the candidate of historically diminishing the gravity of American losses on September 11 and offering justifications that sympathetic critics often associate with anti-American viewpoints.

Other right-wing strategists and media commentators joined the chorus of criticism. GOP digital strategist Mike Hahn mocked the video presentation of El-Sayed’s message, suggesting the candidate was merely reciting a carefully rehearsed script rather than expressing genuine sentiment.

Meanwhile, Joey Mannarino, a co-founder of the conservative media entity Overton Institute, expressed disbelief at the candidate’s political standing in the competitive Michigan contest. Mannarino strongly condemned El-Sayed's willingness to share political stages with figures who have rationalized the 2001 attacks, raising alarms about the candidate representing Michigan in the upper chamber of Congress.

Media analysts also pointed out strategic shifts in how El-Sayed approached this year's anniversary compared to his previous statements. Chuck Ross, an investigative journalist with The Washington Free Beacon, observed that El-Sayed appeared to read from a teleprompter while strictly confining his remarks to the 2001 attacks themselves. Ross noted that this delivery marked a visible departure from past anniversary statements, in which El-Sayed frequently emphasized the broader fallout and domestic consequences of the subsequent War on Terror.

Scrutiny surrounding El-Sayed's historical commentary on national security has followed the campaign throughout the election cycle. The candidate previously found himself at the center of media attention following reports regarding deleted social media posts, a controversy that also brought pushback against major news outlets over their coverage of his past statements.

El-Sayed has previously sought to create distance between his official platform and Piker’s most provocative public statements. Following separate controversies where Piker utilized extreme language to describe the state of Israel, El-Sayed emphasized that no outside commentator speaks on behalf of his campaign, reserving that authority strictly for himself and his designated campaign staff.

Throughout those past controversies, El-Sayed attempted to pivot the campaign conversation away from internet commentary and back toward local economic concerns. The Democratic contender maintained that while opponents and political pundits attempt to focus voter attention on social media personalities, his campaign remains dedicated to addressing kitchen-table issues such as grocery costs, fuel prices, public education funding, and healthcare access for Michigan families.

Nevertheless, the ongoing controversy underscores the significant political challenges progressive candidates face when navigating relationships with outspoken digital influencers. As the Michigan Senate race moves forward, El-Sayed's historical messaging and high-profile alliances continue to serve as central focal points for Republican opposition.
