Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar declined to respond to inquiries from reporters after law enforcement officials executed a search warrant on the Minneapolis home shared by her son and a roommate who is a convicted felon. The incident has drawn attention after police recovered several firearms and rounds of ammunition from the property during their investigation.
The Minnesota congresswoman was approached in the corridors of Capitol Hill, where journalists questioned her regarding the circumstances surrounding the police raid and whether she planned to advise her son to find alternative housing. Omar chose not to answer the inquiries, walking in silence through the congressional complex without offering a statement on the unfolding situation.
The search of the residence took place on August 25, when Minneapolis police officers carried out a search warrant at the shared living quarters of Omar's 20-year-old son, Adnan Hirsi, and his 22-year-old roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi. During the operation, investigators discovered multiple weapons along with ammunition stored inside the home.
The chain of events leading to the residential search originated from a standard traffic encounter. Law enforcement officers initially pulled Abdi over for a routine traffic stop, during which they determined that he was operating the vehicle without a valid driver's license and lacked necessary proof of insurance.
Following that initial traffic stop, Abdi was initially permitted to leave the scene while authorities arranged to have the automobile impounded. Subsequent inspection of the impounded vehicle revealed the presence of a firearm, prompting law enforcement to take further investigative steps.
Under applicable laws, individuals with prior felony convictions are legally prohibited from possessing firearms. Because Abdi is a convicted felon, the discovery of the weapon in the impounded vehicle provided the legal justification for investigators to secure and execute a search warrant on the residence he shared with Hirsi.
Following the home search and discovery of additional weaponry, Abdi was formally taken into custody and charged with a weapons offense. Records indicate that he was released from detention on the day following his arrest as legal proceedings moved forward.
Court and police records show that Abdi has had numerous prior interactions with the justice system, having been arrested on ten previous occasions. His legal history includes a 2024 felony speeding conviction that resulted from an incident in which he was documented traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
Authorities have emphasized that Hirsi, Omar's son, is not facing any criminal charges and has not been accused of any unlawful conduct in connection with the incident. Omar herself is also not accused of any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, the discovery of weapons in a shared residence occupied by a convicted felon has drawn intense public scrutiny regarding Hirsi's associations.
As Omar navigated Capitol Hill halls, reporters pressed her directly on what knowledge she had about the events and what advice she might offer her son concerning his living arrangement. Despite repeated questions about whether she would counsel him to relocate away from the situation, the lawmaker did not stop to engage with members of the press.
Attempts to obtain official comment from the congresswoman's team were also unsuccessful, as Omar's congressional office did not immediately provide a statement or response when approached by media outlets seeking clarity on the matter.
The situation has created political contrast given Omar’s longstanding, prominent advocacy for stricter federal and state firearm regulations. In her legislative role, the congresswoman has consistently championed policies such as closing gun show background check loopholes and establishing "red flag" provisions aimed at temporarily restricting firearm access for individuals assessed to pose risks to public safety.
Omar, who entered history as a Somali refugee and the first hijab-wearing woman elected to Congress, continues to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, a heavily Democratic constituency where she is currently campaigning for another term.
The controversy also brings renewed attention to previous encounters involving her family and law enforcement. In a prior public disclosure, Omar noted that her U.S.-born son had previously been stopped by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents during an encounter in Minnesota on December 13.
As legal proceedings against Abdi proceed through the court system, Omar has maintained her public focus on her congressional duties and reelection campaign, continuing to withhold public comment regarding the search warrant executed at her son's home.
