Silicon Valley Entrepreneur Sparks Controversy Over DEI Criticism

Silicon Valley executive Ankit Gupta has ignited a fierce debate by suggesting that Vice President JD Vance's advocacy for hiring American workers signals a return to "DEI," a term Gupta implies has negative connotations. Gupta, a general partner at the esteemed startup accelerator Y Combinator, faced an immediate backlash from various figures, including government officials and political leaders, who argued that Vance's stance was merely about prioritizing American jobs and workers.

In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gupta wrote, "In a win for the woke left, DEI is back." This comment was a response to Vance's call for American corporations to focus on hiring and training American workers when they require new employees. The term "DEI," or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, has been a subject of contention and has often been used by critics to imply that certain policies favor non-white or non-male candidates at the expense of whites and males.

Labor Department Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito swiftly反驳了Gupta's观点,认为美国公司应该优先考虑美国工人。他在社交媒体上写道:“No, Ankit. It's called putting your own citizens first.” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon, and Nalin Haley, the son of former South Carolina Governor and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, also joined the chorus of critics.

Ferguson took a particularly strong stance, labeling Gupta's post as “deeply uncomfortable” and asserting that the purpose of the American economy is to promote the general welfare of American workers. "I'm afraid it's increasingly obvious to many people that individuals such as this guy do not have the best interests of America and her citizens in mind," Ferguson wrote, referring to Gupta. His response to Gupta's post was later deleted after Gupta changed his social media settings.

Nalin Haley, in his response, accused technology companies and other employers of exploiting visa programs and hiring practices to obtain cheaper foreign labor, jobs that Americans could perform. "You can have a meritocracy in AMERICA but it has to apply to AMERICANS. Otherwise we're just a globalist entity and not even a country anymore. Ban the H-1B Visa now!" he declared on X.

The controversy comes as the Trump administration is pushing for a comprehensive overhaul of the H-1B visa program, which allows U.S. employers to hire temporary foreign workers in specialty occupations. The Trump administration's effort to impose a $100,000 payment on new H-1B petitions through a presidential proclamation was a landmark step in their push to restrict the program.

The clash between Gupta's views and those of his critics highlights a broader debate over economic policy and national identity in the United States. As the Trump administration continues to advocate for policies that favor American workers, figures like Vance and D'Esposito argue that these measures are necessary to protect and empower the nation's workforce.

Fox News Digital reached out to Y Combinator and Gupta for comment on his characterization but did not receive a response. The ongoing debate over DEI and national employment policies is expected to intensify as the midterm elections approach, with these issues becoming central to the national conversation.
