Texas Senate Hopeful James Talarico Backtracks on Past Gender Statements, Supports Minor Surgery Bans

In a notable recalibration of his social policy platform, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico announced his support for prohibiting gender-related surgical procedures on minors and voiced opposition to transgender-identifying males participating in female athletic categories when fairness or player safety is compromised. The Texas state representative also walked back previous progressive theological and cultural remarks, acknowledging that past assertions regarding gender and religion had missed the mark.

The declarations arrived during a sit-down interview conducted with Fox News while Talarico attended a campaign food drive in Dallas. The event unfolded against the backdrop of heightened statewide political maneuvering, taking place just a short distance from the location where the inaugural Republican midterm convention was getting underway in the city’s downtown center.

Talarico’s shifting tone emerges amid an unexpectedly competitive battle for the U.S. Senate in Texas, where recent polling indicates a narrow margin between the Democratic challenger and incumbent Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The contest carries immense national stakes, as the outcome in the state could dictate the balance of power in the upper chamber and shape the legislative trajectory of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

When directly asked whether he would cast a vote in the U.S. Senate in support of federal legislation banning gender transition surgeries for minors, Talarico responded with an unequivocal endorsement, stating he would "absolutely" back such a measure.

Seeking to reconcile his federal stance with his voting history in Austin, Talarico maintained that his underlying perspective on the issue has remained steady over time. He defended his prior opposition to state-level legislation by arguing that the statutory language drafted by Texas lawmakers was far too expansive in its reach.

Talarico explained that his legislative approach has centered on attempting to refine broad bills through the amendment process. He stated that he previously backed a key amendment designed to restrict state prohibitions exclusively to surgical interventions on minors, arguing that lawmakers must oppose full bills whenever they encompass provisions deemed overly broad or detrimental.

During the 2023 legislative session in the Texas House of Representatives, Talarico voted against Senate Bill 14, a measure that outlawed surgical gender procedures, puberty-blocking medications, and specific hormone therapies for underage individuals. During the floor debate, House Democrats introduced 18 separate amendments aimed at modifying the legislation, all of which received Talarico’s support but ultimately failed to pass before the broader prohibition was enacted.

Addressing the contentious topic of athletics, Talarico recognized that transgender inclusion in competitive sports represents a major concern for Texas voters. He declared his opposition to transgender athletes taking part in girls' sports divisions whenever such participation presents a risk to the fairness of the competition or physical safety.

Talarico connected his viewpoint on athletic participation to his professional history outside of the legislature, emphasizing that his background as a former public school educator drives his concern for the welfare of student athletes. He reiterated that maintaining safe and equitable standards across school sports must remain a guiding priority.

The candidate's current framing represents a distinct contrast to his actions during the 2021 Texas legislative session. At that time, while serving as a member of the House Public Education Committee, Talarico vigorously opposed Senate Bill 29—a proposal requiring students to participate in athletic programs aligning with the biological sex documented on their birth certificates—dismissing the legislative effort as a "manufactured problem."

Later during that same 2021 legislative calendar, Talarico also cast a vote opposing House Bill 25, which successfully established statutory restrictions on school sports participation across the state of Texas.

Beyond statutory policies, Talarico also addressed previous contentious statements he had made regarding gender identity and religion. When confronted with his prior assertions claiming that six genders exist and that God is nonbinary, Talarico conceded that those public remarks failed to accurately convey his message and missed the mark.

The candidate has sought to pivot his general election message toward broader economic themes, pledging to center his platform on household affordability while delivering sharp critiques of the U.S. Supreme Court. Recent campaign appearances, including an address to supporters at the Cailloux Theater in Kerrville on August 31, have highlighted his statewide effort to broaden his appeal across diverse voting blocs.

With the November 3 general election approaching, the Texas Senate contest remains one of the most closely watched races in the nation. Both campaigns face scrutiny, as Paxton contends with internal party divisions and controversies of his own, leaving both parties fiercely competing for every advantage in a race with national implications.
