Tributes have been paid across Wales and the wider business community following the death of prominent industrial leader Owain Davies, who was killed alongside two other people when a light aircraft crashed in the Swiss Alps. The tragic incident occurred in the high-altitude terrain of southwestern Switzerland, cutting short the life of the respected executive and dedicated charity trustee.
The 55-year-old businessman from west Wales served as the managing director of Amcanu, a well-established engineering company headquartered in Burry Port, Carmarthenshire. News of his death has prompted widespread mourning among colleagues, local community members, and search-and-rescue organisations that he supported throughout his life.
The fatal accident occurred on a Tuesday when the aircraft, identified as a Cirrus SR22T, went down high in the mountainous terrain near the resort town of Leukerbad, located in the southern Swiss canton of Valais. The plane was carrying three individuals, all of whom suffered fatal injuries when the aircraft impacted the rugged Alpine slope.
According to Swiss aviation and regional authorities, the light aircraft had departed from Sion airport, situated along the Rhône Valley. For reasons that have not yet been determined by investigators, the plane crashed into the mountainside roughly ten minutes after taking off on its journey.
Eyewitnesses in the Alpine vicinity reported observing plumes of smoke and flames rising from the crash location shortly after the impact occurred. The severe terrain necessitated a rapid, large-scale emergency deployment to locate the wreckage and assess the scene.
Emergency response teams were quickly mobilised across the canton, drawing in specialised personnel from the Valais Rescue Organisation, regional police officers, and local firefighting units. Three rescue helicopters were deployed directly to the high-elevation crash site to assist emergency crews in securing the area.
Swiss authorities have confirmed that three people lost their lives in the disaster, with formal identification procedures currently underway. Officials have verified that two of the victims were British citizens, including Davies, while work continues to formally identify the second Briton and the third occupant of the aircraft.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated that it is actively providing consular assistance and support to the families of the two British nationals who died in Switzerland. British diplomatic officials also confirmed that they remain in close communication with local authorities handling the aftermath of the crash.
Multiple official inquiries have been launched to uncover the precise factors that led to the fatal crash. The Swiss Transportation Safety Board has commenced a formal investigation into the aviation incident, while parallel legal and investigative inquiries are being conducted by the Valais Police alongside the Office of the Attorney General.
Davies’ family expressed their profound heartbreak following the disaster, with his son Aron Davies describing the tragedy as an unimaginable loss. He paid tribute to his father as a remarkably driven, determined individual and a natural problem solver who refused to accept that any challenge was insurmountable.
Aron Davies also reflected on his father’s enduring guidance, noting that he was a vital personal and professional mentor whose absence would be deeply felt not only within the immediate family circle but also across the entire Amcanu workforce.
In an official statement, the engineering firm Amcanu expressed profound sadness over the loss of its managing director, remembering him as a spirited, strong-willed, and deeply caring leader. The company emphasised that Davies always placed his family at the absolute centre of his life.
Davies was described as deeply devoted to his wife Michelle, tremendously proud of his two children Aron and Ffion, and overjoyed in his role as a grandfather to his young grandchildren, Oakley and Albie.
Amcanu holds deep roots in west Wales, having been originally established in Burry Port in 1975 by Davies’ father, Spencer Davies OBE. Owain Davies assumed overall leadership of the family enterprise in 2000, guiding the engineering firm through more than two decades of industrial growth and technical development.
Beyond his commercial work, Davies was known as a proud Welshman and fluent Welsh speaker who dedicated substantial time to charitable initiatives across the nation. Since 2017, he had served as a trustee for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, contributing his extensive administrative and leadership experience to support emergency medical aviation services.
Dr Kyle Jacques, chair of trustees for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, commended Davies for making a significant contribution to the vital emergency organisation. He remembered Davies as a valued friend and colleague whose enduring loyalty, generosity of spirit, and steadfast support would be greatly missed by everyone connected to the service.
Davies also possessed a longstanding personal commitment to coastal maritime safety in his home community. Earlier in his life, he spent nearly twenty-five years volunteering as an active helmsman with the Burry Port Lifeboat crew, establishing a long legacy of community service before his untimely death in the Swiss Alps.
